Reyes Remedies Physical Therapy
My journey into physical therapy began long before I became a Doctor of Physical Therapy. It began with my own experience as a patient and with my family.
Growing up with a father who is a retired U.S. Army veteran living with the effects of a traumatic brain injury, I gained an early appreciation for the physical, emotional, and functional challenges that injury can create—not only for the individual, but for the entire family. His experience helped shape my understanding of resilience, rehabilitation, and the importance of helping people maintain independence and quality of life.
My own experience with physical therapy began unexpectedly at just 13 years old, when I experienced significant back pain related to a herniated disc and sports injuries. That experience sparked my interest in sports medicine and in understanding how the human body moves, heals, and performs.
From Patient to Clinician
At 18, while pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training at Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida, I experienced another deeply personal challenge: urinary incontinence and pelvic pain. Experiencing these issues at such a young age gave me an entirely different perspective that textbooks could never provide. I learned what it feels like to experience symptoms that can be difficult or uncomfortable to talk about.
At 19 years old, I underwent my first lumbar discectomy.
Rather than allowing these experiences to define what I could not do, they became part of what motivated me to understand rehabilitation on a deeper level. During my years in sports medicine, I had the opportunity to work with NFL, MLB, and collegiate athletes, gaining experience in injury prevention, rehabilitation, manual therapies, performance, and the demands placed on the human body at the highest levels of competition.
These experiences reinforced something I had already begun to understand as a patient: rehabilitation is not simply about treating an injury. It is about helping someone return to the life they want to live.
An Education Rooted in Service
My undergraduate education at Barry University holds a special place in my journey.
Barry was founded in 1940 as Barry College for Women by the Adrian Dominican Sisters. As a Catholic institution rooted in the Dominican tradition, its early mission emphasized education, service, compassion, social justice, and the development of the whole person. Barry later became coeducational and was officially renamed Barry University in 1981.
Being educated within that tradition helped shape the way I view healthcare—not simply as treating a condition, but as serving the whole person with compassion, dignity, and respect.
Becoming a Doctor of Physical Therapy
In 2016, I earned my Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Florida International University (FIU). FIU’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program emphasizes evidence-based clinical practice, critical thinking, clinical skills, and experiences across diverse healthcare settings.
FIU’s history is deeply connected to the diverse community of South Florida. Established in 1965 and opening its doors in 1972, FIU was created to serve the rapidly growing and culturally diverse population of Miami and South Florida. Today, FIU is a major Hispanic-Serving Institution and Hispanic-Serving Research University, reflecting the diverse community it serves.
Barry taught me the importance of service and compassion. FIU reinforced the importance of diversity, accessibility, and community. My clinical experiences taught me how to apply those values to rehabilitation.
But my own rehabilitation journey was not over.
Learning to Rebuild Again
During pregnancy, I experienced a slip and fall in the shower, which resulted in another significant setback to my back.
In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic I underwent my second lumbar discectomy.
Going through another spinal surgery while post-partum and during such an unprecedented time reinforced the importance of patience, individualized rehabilitation, and meeting people where they are. I understood firsthand how frustrating it can be when your body does not cooperate with the life you are trying to live.
It also deepened my empathy for patients who are dealing with pain, fear, uncertainty, changes in mobility, or a loss of confidence in their bodies.
Why Reyes Remedies?
Reyes Remedies was born from this combination of personal experience, clinical experience, education, and a desire to serve others differently.
Today, I continue to work in acute care rehabilitation at a local hospital, while pursuing a dream that has been growing throughout my career: creating a physical therapy practice where people feel heard, educated, supported, and empowered.
That vision became Reyes Remedies Physical Therapy.
I created Reyes Remedies because I believe physical therapy should be about more than treating a diagnosis. It should be about understanding the person behind the diagnosis.
Whether someone is dealing with back pain, a herniated disc, pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, weakness, balance problems, fall risk, an injury, postoperative recovery, ergonomic challenges, or simply wants to move better and remain active, my goal is to provide care that is individualized, practical, and meaningful.
My personal experiences have taught me that there is no single path to recovery. Sometimes progress means returning to sport. Sometimes it means being able to work without pain. Sometimes it means walking confidently, getting up from a chair, caring for your family, controlling your bladder, or simply feeling like yourself again.
Wherever you are in your journey, you deserve care that meets you there.
